Klefkarp lives primarily in urban waterways where it can find new keys to attach to its barbels. It drags its keys in the sediment to kick up silt and discover long buried metals.
Klefkarp swallows up any keys it finds and stockpiles them within. It cannot spit them back out, so to recover a stolen item, one must reach down its gullet and fish it out by hand.
Its swimming muscles are weak, so it is easily washed away by currents. It never lets go of a key that it likes, so people give it the keys to vaults and safes as a way to prevent crime.
