The tree on Torkoal's back grows until it is too heavy for it to move, then it uses the flames from within its shell to burn down the tree. This process is also how Torkoal nourishes itself. It sometimes unintentionally starts forest fires.
It battles using energy it gets from burning coal. Small Pokémon occasionally gather on its unmoving back to begin building their nests.
