The shell on its back is actually the one it hatched from, melted onto its back from the heat of its warm belly. Torchwig emits enough heat to make most things it touches melt. It uses this molten material to strengthen its shell.
Made from soil, the shell on its back hardens when it drinks water. If attacked, it strikes back by spitting balls of fire it forms in its stomach.
