Slowmander is a constant danger to itself. If the fire on its tail goes out it dies, but it constantly desires to try to go fishing with it. Trainers need have constant supervision over Slowmander, though thankfully it doesn't do anything quickly.
The flame that burns at the tip of its tail is an indication of its emotions. It catches prey by dipping its tail in water at the side of a river.
