The black mass appears to be Wobtump's true body, and the hollow blue head merely vestigial. However, if this is pointed out somehow - physically, verbally, or gesturally - the black body will shrink and hide inside its head.
These Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died in the forest. Usually docile, a Wobtump strikes back ferociously if its black tail is attacked.
