Fossilized Tanleep have been found covering ancient tree fossils. Some researchers theorize that these fossils form when trees were washed out to sea while growing. In modern times, Tanleep's writhing body clings to trees in groups.

It disguises itself as seaweed by making its tentacles sway. Its vines snap off easily and painlessly if they are grabbed, allowing it to make a quick getaway.
