Smearper live in very cold environments and coat themselves in a gel that is produced from their tail that helps to insulate them against the cold. They also use it as a defence mechanism, squirting it in the face of predators.

Smearper usually live in water but come out onto land seeking food occasionally. A Smearper marks its territory using a fluid that leaks out from the tip of its tail.
