Charper secretes an oily substance from its tail that keeps its flame burning. They are not born with it aflame, so one of their parents ignites it. When upset, they seek out others to combine flames, a gesture that seems to soothe and comfort them.
Charper usually live in water but come out onto land seeking food occasionally. The flame that burns at the tip of its tail is an indication of its emotions.
