The flame on the stick reflects Braivoir's emotional state at the time. The more defensive and protective of others it feels, the bigger and hotter the fire burning on the end.
It apparently does not feel the pull of gravity because it supports itself with psychic power. When the twig is plucked from its tail, friction sets the twig alight.
