As Bonper gets older, its body becomes woodier. This is a strong defence mechanism as other Pokémon are unable to digest them, though young Bonper are tender and taste similar to bamboo shoots. If part of their gill is eaten, they can regrow it.
Bonper usually live in water but come out onto land seeking food occasionally. It looks as if it is always crying.
