Monpert lives in two very different environments. It makes its nest on the rocky crags of tall mountains, but during the hottest part of the day, it descends to hunt among the cool, marshy lowlands.

If it senses the approach of a storm and a tidal wave, it protects its seaside nest by piling up boulders. To intimidate attackers, it stretches the fire on its tail to make itself appear bigger.
